Review of Creatures of Light

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Creatures of Light" by Johnny Raye.]
Creatures of Light: Gathering of the Rephaim is the second book of the Creatures of Light series, following The Awakening and preceding The Coming Storm (planned for 2026), but readers who have not read the first book will still enjoy it.
When Agent Jonathan Rush, Kaylea, and their team investigate the ruins of the White Mountain Military Research Facility, the reader isn't just passively seeing an investigation scene where people just talk. The reader shares Rush's curiosity by asking the same questions: Why was the destruction caused? Who caused it? Why are high school students seemingly involved? The weirdest thing is that there is no evidence pointing to terrorism or human malice. Rather, something… advanced is involved, which brings the story closer to sci-fi territory.
There are also a couple plot threads set like bombs ready to go off at a minute's notice. The president is revealed to be inhabited by a Nephiylim, drinking human blood. Funnily, the book avoids the "vampire" word until very far into the story when the main characters connect the dots. There's also Katrina, who is having plot-relevant nightmares (they got stronger when spending romantic time with Ethan) and drawing them out. If you want to find out what the Nephiylim's deal is, give this book a read.
I like how each chapter does not wander aimlessly. After every chapter, the reader gets closer to the mystery, like eating pie one bite at a time. The only bits I do not like are when the narration decides to tell and not show, like saying Kaylea is "independent" or a creature is "horrifying".
I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The book is perfectly edited. There are no grammatical errors or typos, though I prefer that there are no cursive words, as they feel a bit jarring. If you are looking for an urban fantasy book that features advanced, non-human creatures with unknown plans as to what to do with humanity, Creatures of Light: Gathering of the Rephaim is a perfect fit for you.
