Review of Pocket Watch Portal Adventure
Pocket Watch Portal Adventure by MM Myers is an adorable children's book. It follows four kids and their adventures. They find an old pocket watch that is capable of transporting them to different places in time and space. On their first trip, they go back in time to when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. They must navigate the potential dangers, such as being eaten by a dinosaur or getting lost. However, they are also able to make friends with some of the friendly dinosaurs. The watch takes them to other places as well. Check out a copy to follow their adventures.
One part I quite liked was the range of ages the kids were. The oldest, Justice, is 11 while the youngest, Baby Artie, is only 2 years old. Accompanying them are Teddy and Ellie, who are 8 and 6, respectively. Myers did an excellent job of characterizing them in a way that made their age differences apparent. For example, Justice, being the oldest, was the leader of the group, and Artie had a distinct speech pattern, given that he was still learning to talk.
Additionally, I thought there was a nice sense of suspense and danger throughout the book. The children, while visiting new places and times, had to be careful to ensure they had a way to get back home. They also had to deal with the potential dangers of each situation they were in. While the book is by no means scary, I think it had the right amount of suspense for the target audience.
I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. The characters, plot, and writing are all perfect for a large age range. It was also exceptionally well-edited; I did not spot a single error in the book. I would have liked a few images throughout the book, but this is not a major enough issue to warrant taking off a star. There was art of the characters at the beginning, but none later in the book. While adults might find the writing simplistic, it is perfect for those aged eight to thirteen. Younger children might enjoy having this book read to them, as it might be slightly too long for them to read on their own. The book does have some religious themes; however, I believe it is still suitable for those of any religious background.
