I didn’t come into The Green Land expecting speed, but I also didn’t expect to feel quite this unsure about how I was supposed to be reading it.

It follows Eli and Arielle moving across what’s left of America with their son, Zion, looking for Verdancia. I kept waiting for the trip to narrow into something sharper. It never really did. I kept waiting anyway.

Some of the emotional moments hit hard. Others just sat there. There were stretches where I felt weighed down by the same tone for too long, and instead of feeling moved, I felt restless. The writing is careful. Maybe too careful. At a certain point, I noticed myself wanting it to hurry up, which isn’t something I usually feel proud of admitting.

The world-building stays mostly in the background, which I liked at first. Verdancia doesn’t feel solid. It feels like something people convince themselves is real enough to walk toward. I’m not sure the book wants you to believe in it. Halfway through, I realized I didn’t know if I cared whether they reached it, and that surprised me more than anything else in the story.

The pacing is slow, obviously on purpose. Still, I put the book down for a while. When I picked it back up, it felt like nothing had moved except my tolerance for the rhythm. That might be on me. Or not.

The editing was perfect, though. I didn't encounter any errors that distracted me from the story. It was evident that the book went through professional proofreading and editing.

I’m giving The Green Land 4 out of 5 stars. Even with my frustrations, it stayed with me longer than I expected. I keep thinking back to certain scenes without really meaning to, which feels like its own kind of success. A deduction of a star for the reason mentioned above.
