This book follows the life of Lucius, a soldier who tries to hide from his past and the loss of his brothers. Lucius now lies on the beach, drinking, sleeping it off, and constantly haunted by memories of his past. He gets called to duty to protect and to heal, and this was the beginning of his self-discovery and unfolding of secrets that lie in the dark.

Lucius isn’t just an ordinary soldier; he is a man with great power, such as telepathy, levitation, camouflage, and super speed, and he has even been able to visit dreams. Despite all of his great abilities, Lucius has many negative opinions about himself and is not so confident in his abilities.

Igniting the Phoenix by Alethea Stauron has a great depiction of love, war, and the mystery that makes up the book. I love the development of the relationship between Josephine and Lucius, starting as the protector and the protected. Additionally, I love the character development that takes place in the book, from someone who drinks heavily to sleep to him being a protector and a healer to someone, even though he is mostly used to being in combat.

Also, the book writing is very detailed and descriptive; the world-building is rich and very well portrayed. For instance, the scene when Lucius was in a sandstorm or when he was in Josephine’s dream, all of this builds on making the book an enjoyable one. This isn’t just a fantasy book; it is one centred on the theme of grief, loneliness, loss, healing, and even love.

I didn’t find anything to dislike about the book, and it is exceptionally well edited. I’ll rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars for how the author develops the storyline without giving away too much or too little, and the character development was great as well. Both major and minor characters are well explored and not left as just a plot filler. This book is recommended to readers who love romance and fantasy fiction; it is a story that tugs at one’s heart.
