Review of I, Robot Soldier
A robot awakes, slightly damaged, and begins to fight off cockroaches and rats. After some time, the robot begins to move and runs into a little girl. After some prompting, the girl tells the robot she requires assistance from him, making her safety the robot's new objective. Thus begins the journey of Amy and One Shot the robot's journey through a world destroyed by war. Will they be able to survive? Are there other humans alive? I loved the character of Amy. I thought it was adorable how she would latch onto what others might consider objects, such as a construction robot or a plant, give them names, and treat them as part of her little family. I also thought her obsession with cats was endearing. Many young children want a pet, and despite her circumstances, Amy was no different.
The writing style was also excellent. The narrative was told from One Shot's perspective. This gave a unique viewpoint as, being a robot, logic was a major driving point. However, since Amy was his boss, the contradicting commands of a young child were also law. This made for a lot of interesting speculation by One Shot that I thought was well articulated.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book was overall well-edited; I only noticed a few minor errors. The characterization in the book was excellent and drove the narrative forward. There were no aspects of the book that I can pinpoint that I disliked. I thought Dennstedt did an amazing job describing the world through the lens of a robot. The robot's struggles, akin to regular human struggles in such situations but through a logic-based view, added such a unique take on the genre. I believe that this book is suitable for both teens and adults. For those who enjoy post-apocalyptic novels that focus on characterization, then I highly suggest that you check out I, Robot Soldier.
