Starfleet UFP Guide by Jack Avon can be defined as a Star Trek reference guide. Its chapters describe many alien races that appear in the Star Trek saga and their home planets. Even people who have little knowledge of Star Trek know Vulcans and Klingons but only fans have familiarity with other races. Many of them are part of the United Federation of Planets (UFP), an organization that pursues peace and knowledge. Starfleet is UFP's instrument for exploring the unknown and occasionally defending the Federation's citizens. Starfleet's main goal is to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations to boldly go where no one has gone before. If you want to know more, read this guide!

Since the original series aired in the 1960s, Star Trek has grown into a phenomenon that went beyond television with movies, books, and merchandise. Its creator Gene Roddenberry depicted a future when humans abandoned their search for material wealth and their tendency to fight each other to pursue higher goals. Humans live and work alongside aliens such as Vulcans while other aliens are still hostile.

Reading this guide, I could see Jack Avon's passion and enthusiasm in putting together details about the Federation, the races that belong to it, and some others who can be friendly, hostile, or simply indifferent. I liked how the descriptions were vivid, offering much more than just bits of information. When you read about a certain alien race, you get the feeling of who these people are.

Jack Avon included images to depict aliens and their home planets. He used some artificial intelligence systems to create the images, sadly, with mixed results. Some of the aliens are not reproduced correctly. For example, the Andorians have two antennae on their foreheads but in the image that is supposed to feature them, they have no antennae. Fans will not recognize them while newbies will be confused because the picture doesn't match the description they just read. In some cases, the portraits are very different from the aliens seen on TV. Some pictures contain descriptions, but the letters are too small, so they are often unreadable.

The editing is also problematic. In this type of book, checking the correct spelling of every name is crucial. Instead, there are several misspelled names. If you want to research an alien race or a character on the Internet, your search engine might still give you correct results, but that can't be an excuse. There are also several formatting problems, mostly wrong page breaks.

In my opinion, Starfleet UFP Guide can be a fantastic reference guide for the Star Trek universe after a revision with more editing and proper formatting. It contains neither profanity nor sexual references, so it's suitable for young readers who are looking for an introduction to Star Trek. Sadly, due to the problems with the errors, the formatting, and the pictures, I have to rate it 3 out of 5 stars.

This seems like a fantastic book. I don't think I will enjoy it that much as I am not familiar with the Star Trek saga. But you did a stunning a job well done.

The Star Trek universe is so fascinating, and it sounds as if this guide taps into that potential. It's a shame about the illustrations. I like playing with DallE sometimes but have realized that it's better not to use it for professional purposes, quite possibly not at all. Thanks for your insightful review.

In my PRQ, I added to the errors some considerations about the images, as I played with some "art generators" myself, so I know their limitations and had the same impression as you and I recommended to leave the images of the aliens out of the book. Thank you for your appreciation!

Humans abandoning the unimportant to pursue higher goals and the Star Trek reference appeals to me. Great summary. I hope the author accommodates your recommendations.

I think this book can really help people understand the StrarTrek universe. There are so many series and characters and intelligent races that a person can actually get confused.
But it's really sad that the author couldn't find a good editor. Hopefully he will fix that soon.
And thanks for the great review!

This seems to me a work of passion rather than your usual professional product. That means that you can see the author's enthusiasm about the subject but he's probably not used to creating a book at a professional level. I hope my PRQ helped him. Thank you for your appreciation!
