A divorced man, yearning for an opportunity to win back his long-gone beloved, is confronted with alien visitors in the most unexpected place: a Walmart parking lot in Dubuque, Iowa. The alien visitors proposed an insurance policy to Ernie E. Parmenter III, under the guise of saving the world and its habitat from extinction. Ernie is hoping this will bring attention to him, and Lorelei, his beloved, will come back to him. With this, Ernie signed the insurance policy, but one can't help but wonder: will this bizarre encounter be their downfall or their salvation? Will the extraterrestrial salesman offer protection or destruction? What cosmic secrets lie unseen behind the grand facade? Read Xenu's Lotto, Part One: The Grand Game by Mark McGhee, to find out how the cosmic tendrils are connected or tangled together.

Xenu's Lotto, Part One explores the futuristic year 2059, where the mundane life in Dubuque, Iowa, is upended by the sudden arrival of a giant UFO, giving both attention, wealth, and death to the town. The book explores themes of desperation, community, and human unpredictability. The character development is robust, especially with the protagonist's journey from despair to a reluctant, conscience-driven heroism. The plot is well explored, taking the reader from one landscape to another. The author beautifully maintains the pace, direction, and interaction between the major planets explored in the book. This coordination in pace helps keep readers from being distracted or confused by the constant change in landscape.

The most commendable element in this book is McGhee's writing style, which is both engaging and evocative. The book is perfectly intoned with the right blend of suspense and intrigue, making it difficult to put the book down. McGhee's descriptive prowess brings the cosmic world to life, painting vivid pictures that immerse readers in Ernie's journey of recompense and self-guilt. The character development is like nothing I have ever experienced, a part I find most beautiful in the character development of Joecrett into a doting and proud father to his sons, inspired by his unchanging crude archaic ways that add more beauty to the book because such was unexpected of him. The author skillfully uses humorous dialogue in the book. I also love how Ernie was able to confront his own guilt and fear by conversing with Chuck McGhee and getting reasonable advice. This showcased his resilience and determination to save the world he lives in. I highly appreciate how the plot draws the reader in to keep reading and guessing.

While the book is a captivating read, there are some parts I would have loved to have explored more or not been so overly detailed. For instance, I would have loved it if Ernie’s life as a senator had been more explored. Additionally, the humor, though well-crafted, sometimes overshadows the story's more serious undertones, leaving readers craving a bit more depth about certain scenes. While the book excels on its unique premise and backdrop, a few twists feel anticipated, which slightly diminishes the overall suspense. For example, the people's reaction to the UFO and alien interaction, though entertaining, follows a somewhat expected trajectory.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Despite its aforementioned flaws, it successfully blends humor, suspense, and a touch of science fiction, making it a unique addition to the genre. The vivid character portrayals and the intriguing plot make it a must-read for those who enjoy a blend of comedy and cosmic mystery. I highly recommend this book to readers who love sci-fi and UFO books; this will definitely be a good read. McGhee's imaginative world-building and engaging storytelling style make the book an exciting one to read. The book is exceptionally well edited.

Despite the minor flaws you pointed out, this seems like an engaging story of contact with aliens that takes a turn that is unusual considering Ernie's role. It looks like this is the first part of a bigger story, so I might wait for at least the second part to decide if I want to read it. Regardless, thank you for your great review!

Although I haven't read the book, you gave me a sense of the area 51 movies and Steven Spielberg's ET. With that said, the book sounds like I would like to lose myself in this type of Sci Fi work that you thought was good. You also gave it a great review. Keep up the good work.

I didn’t expect to get so invested in this story. The plot twists were perfectly timed. Some characters felt a bit flat, but the main ones kept me hooked till the end.
