Shattered Fate and the Laws of Existence is an exciting novel by author Billy Morris. This 287-page, according to Amazon, Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel draws readers in with the introduction of a new world filled with magic. Published by Xlibris US July 10th, 2017, this book takes readers on an exciting adventure.
Haden is a very powerful warmonger and master of dragons. He has control of the four master dragons and has conquered many kingdoms. As he prepares to invade the territory of Utopia his forces are attacked by a young witch named Angelina. Soon rumors spread that Haden and his mighty dragons have been defeated and the dragons are lost. This leads other warmongers to descend on the small kingdom to claim what is left of Haden’s massive army and attempt to locate and control the dragons themselves.
Soon after Haden's defeat, Angelina is captured by what is left of his warmongers seeking to avenge their lord's death. Realizing that every other powerful group is also seeking this young witch, they leave her for dead in the city of Hela. Unable to control her power and fearing what the future holds she is reunited with her only friend, an old woman whom she met before the invasion of Haden’s army. To ensure her safety, she leaves behind the only home she has ever known to face her fears. She must find a way to control her powers and prevent the death of millions of people by stopping the converging magic and massive armies.
This story takes place a thousand years after the collision of two different worlds. Eden and Metro collided to create a new world filled with magic and dragons. They should have been destroyed in the collision based on the laws of existence but the magic created is stronger and keeps them together. It has two suns and an area that has not seen the light since the collision. This variation has also caused a difference in the magic associated with each area.
The novel follows several different characters as the plot progresses. Haden and Angelina remained the main characters of the story, but several different supporting characters were introduced to build up the two main characters tales. With the narration switching back and forth between characters consistently throughout the novel, I found it difficult to keep up. I did not understand their relevance to the story until the very end. It caused the storyline to move slowly. There were also several instances where words were missing disrupting the flow of the story as well.
I did enjoy reading about the dragons and their creation. This story took a different approach to the development of dragons following the introduction of magic into the new world. I also enjoyed following Angelina as she struggled with her power. She was easy to relate to and I felt that she was a strong female lead. I also enjoyed the fact that even though there were violent scenes and fighting, there was little mention of blood and gore.
I feel that this book would be great for readers 12 and up who enjoy magic, dragons, and action. This novel sparks the reader’s imagination, but due to the errors found in the story and the slow pace of the storyline, I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. With more editing, this book could easily be a 4-star novel.
