In "The Chronicles of Brelhiem Novella One: Of Goblins and Grim Science," Kaleb A. Dennis crafts an engrossing journey into a world where danger and dark arts intertwine. Elydir and Graham, two rangers, accompanied by their faithful dog, are drawn into a perilous conflict upon arriving in Ærivale. Here, they encounter a band of goblins under the sinister guidance of a dark occultist, a battle that introduces them to Naomi, a formidable new companion. Naomi, driven by a relentless determination, believes Isaac Crawford, a master of black magic, orchestrates these attacks. Her goal is clear: to capture Crawford before the Witch Hunter Inquisition, a relentless force against witchcraft, can reach him first. This tale weaves a complex narrative where our heroes must confront not only the immediate threats but also navigate the broader implications of the Inquisition's looming presence.

As the story unfolds, Dennis masterfully blends elements of fantasy with the stark mechanics of grim science, creating a unique backdrop that enriches the narrative. Naomi’s urgency and the layered dynamics between her, Elydir, and Graham deepen as they delve deeper into the shadows of Ærivale. Each character is meticulously crafted, with their personal stakes contributing to an escalating tension throughout the novella. The presence of the Witch Hunter Inquisition adds a formidable layer to the plot, presenting an omnipresent danger to those dabbling in the arcane.

The narrative pace is tightly controlled, balancing thrilling action sequences with insightful character interactions that drive the plot forward. Dennis’s skill in dialogue and description brings this vivid world to life, making each moment in Ærivale resonate with a sense of urgency and peril. The culmination of their journey is both a satisfying resolution to the immediate threats and a promising setup for future adventures in the Brelhiem series.

Dennis’s narrative is not only a journey through a fantastical landscape but also an exploration of the themes of loyalty, courage, and the quest for justice in a world overshadowed by malevolent forces. His prose is clear and engaging, ensuring that readers are captivated from the first page to the last. This novella is a testament to Dennis’s ability to fuse fantasy with intricate world-building, resulting in a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The book is edited exceptionally well,  with nothing to dislike.  I rate this book five out of five stars.
