Gaze upon a Blue Moon by Danna J. Walters is a fantasy novel. The story starts with a young girl, Irelyn, being allowed to play outside on her own, after being told to stay in the yard. Irelyn firmly intends to comply with this order, until that is, she sees a gorgeous blue butterfly. Chasing after the butterfly, she leaves the yard and enters the woods. She is found 36 hours later full of wondrous stories about where she has been and what she has done.
The story jumps forward in time twenty years. At this time Irelyn is a young woman grieving over the death of her Granddad. At the reading of the will she is given a message from her Granddad that she’ll find answers in the trunk. Not knowing anything about the trunk, she searches for it and finds it. Inside there is a letter that her Granddad wrote to her explaining that it was his fault that she went missing as a child!
The story then jumps back in time to 1649, to Cork, Ireland. Irelyn was magically transported to this place and time as a little girl. She is found by a good family and for a time everything is well. Then they are all captured by the English and taken as slaves, to be sold in the Caribbean.
Danna weaves a compelling love story across time. Her style is flowing and easy to read. When I got to just over halfway through the book I thought I was nearing the end, but with a subtle plot twist she brings a little danger into the story. There is a lot going on behind the story which doesn’t get fully explained, but it is still very readable.
The characters are brilliant. As she describes what the little girl is doing, and why, you think to yourself “of course, that is completely right”. She not only gets the feel of the children right, she also portrays the adults extremely well, giving them depth with a very well thought out back story.
The story is very well edited, with only a few mistakes that I could see. A few times there is an extra word included that turns the sentence into nonsense. At other times there is one missed out. The most common mistake was a missing space after punctuation. All these errors barely disturbed the flow of the story, so I’m happy to give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I believe this book will appeal to anyone who loves romance novels, as well as anyone who likes stories of time travel.
