Review of Genesis Awakens
Greek, Roman, or Norse mythology is often included in fantasy literature. However, fiction books that center around Christian doctrine are rare. “Genesis Awakens: The Footnail Series - Book 1” by Akorede Adekoya and Howard Haugom proves to be that. Its tale, which speaks of the nail that was used in Christ's crucifixion, combines mystery, magic, and swordplay.
“Genesis Awakens”, given that the title is named as such, it shows how, as a result of her grandfather's passing, Gen returned to her hometown of Dundurn and came to understand her purpose as a nail-bearer. The events following the funeral changed her normal life as she encountered magic, light, and darkness with her two companions and protectors, Mark, who has adept combat skills, and Merlin, an immortal who can cast spells and is tasked in training Gen to harness the nail’s power. It is an action-packed fantasy book. They battle the three cursed immortals who sought the nail, putting them in danger and raising the possibility of death.
I find it unique that the narrative opens with the tale of Empress Helena’s endeavor to unearth the nails from the time of the A.D. Her story runs parallel to Genesis in the present. So, both of their stories are puzzle pieces that fit together for me to understand the significance of the nail and the connection between Empress Helena and Gen. I also love how the story gives a spotlight to the perspective of each character, even the accursed POV.
The book is a fast-paced read, but the descriptions of scenes are beautifully written, so it doesn’t feel rushed. The fight scenes are expertly staged and very intense, and the way the paragraphs are presented adds a sense of suspense. It is a captivating book, particularly for those who enjoy stories that combine elements of both the ancient and modern worlds, such as sword fights, gun fights, prophecies, and spell casting. Therefore, I give the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars .
