Review of Shadow Eclipse Voyage
Pirates, vampires, romance…oh my!
If you love a strong female lead that loves her combat boots and coffee as much as she enjoys fighting, then look no further than this masterpiece by E.M. Gale. Clarke is the rebel we all dream of being while we read on lunch break at our normal 9-5s. The men don’t take her seriously, brawl with them until they do. Shame, she has no time for that—she has a life to live, and she lives it to the fullest. She may not always have a plan, well she never does really—but with luck and intelligence, she manages to (barely) survive until tomorrow.
Slow burns, spicy scenes that leave just enough to the imagination to be appropriate for work, and the supernatural—the world-building and character development are exceptional in this novel. I normally would not jump at the chance to read a book with such length, but I found I couldn’t put it down! Worrying about what trouble Clarke would find herself in next kept me up way beyond my 9pm bedtime—and I do not regret it at all!
Along with providing danger, chemistry, and adventure--this book also manages to provide some educational development as well. Do not misunderstand me, I will not be publishing any experimental papers or a dissertation on physics or quantum theory any time soon, but it provided a glimpse into the STEM field that I have failed to receive previously. The casual scientific debates the leading characters have as they tackle the unknown worlds and crises that arise during the length of their shared journey showcases the nuanced differences between scientific theory and hypothesis implementation. It also highlights an intellectual depth to Clarke that she rarely shows among those she does not trust--it helps the readers to understand the woman behind the logic.
From editing to content, I have to give this book five stars--anything else would be an injustice!
