The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

Post by Flo-bob »

This has got to be my favorite book by H.G. Wells. He describes every beast on that accursed island with such amazing detail! I place this above War of the Worlds because the characters are much more developed in this novel. Also, the meaning is relevant even today: don't mess with nature.

Don't mess with nature indeed! I've learned the importance of not creating tortured half human creatures through vivisection. My favourite story by Wells though is The Time Machine.

That very well be one of the messages, but there is so much more to this delicious story!

So much more.

I was quite obsessed with Val Kilmer in the 90s, so I watched this movie more times than I can count. Fairuza Balk was also another reason I watched it (she was fantastic in The Craft). I know that the movie has a lot of criticisms, but it doesn't necessarily take away from the point.

How many times must we be told not to "play God" and create things that are unnatural? Modifications are fine, but the entire idea of blending species is quite terrifying.
As for you & your heart & the things you said & didn't say, she will remember them all when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits. (Schmendrick the Magician)

It's considered the first novel about "uplift", modifying species to augment their intelligence. Wells addresses the (im)morality of doing it through vivisection and the responsability of scientists in their actions, themes that are still relevant today.
Ciao :)
