Review of Rise Paladin: Gunslinger Knight
Rise Paladin: Gunslinger Knight is the first book in the Vigilant Watch Saga. It follows the character of Jack Loughlin. He learned that he is a Magnus. This is a person with special, almost supernatural, abilities. Jack struggles with his newfound abilities and what they mean in his life. He had recently left the military, which was another major life change when he was recruited to help fight against Magnus who are on the wrong side of the law. How will Jack adjust to his new life? Will the good be enough to stop the rise of evil? The answers lie in the exciting first book by Jacob Lounsbury.
From the first page, this book sets up a world where heroes and villains are larger than life due to the concept of the Magnus. This superhero and supervillain theme is also portrayed uniquely, as they all have secrets, and the lines between good and evil are blurred through conspiracy theories and rogue agents. The characters, Jack specifically, also had to deal with whether he wanted to accept his new role and become the Paladin or ignore these issues and remain at home with his daughters. I enjoyed seeing the struggles his character faced in this regard.
The one part of the book I disliked was how a large number of characters were introduced at once. I found myself getting a little confused at times. I think a slightly lengthier description of them would have helped. The point of view also changes throughout the book. This did give more insight into the different characters, such as the Circus Insanity, a group of Magnus that only have their own interests at heart. I thought this group was dynamic and made excellent villains.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I am taking off one star due to my confusion with the characters. I found the action and overall plot drove the story along at an appropriate pace that matched the urgency of the story. I also did not notice many errors; I believe that this book was professionally edited. Those who enjoy superhero stories with a lot of action and do not mind a little violence would enjoy this book. It is a fast read that is sure to hold your attention!
