This book contains two short stories. Both stories are about the end of life as we know it. The first story, "Alone," is about a virus that escaped from the frozen depths of the melting ice caps. I won't tell you how it escapes. I will say it is fascinating and a bit scary when you think about it. The second story, "Tipping Point," is about extreme climate change.

Each story is written like a journal or diary entry. I enjoyed the first-person account in both stories. The speech style is smooth and flows seamlessly from one event to another without disjointed rambling. The author has an excellent preface and introduces the stories well. He includes a section in the back about himself. He is an interesting character! At the time of writing the book, he was 73 years old. Roger Mannon has retired from not one but two different careers in his lifetime. He explains how he came to write "Strange Stories II: The Empty Earth." He proves it is always possible to try something new.

While reading these short works, I found myself feeling like I was sitting with the storyteller on a porch somewhere, enjoying a warm summer evening with an old friend. I enjoyed the book from the cover to the last page.

I cannot find anything negative about this work except I wish it were longer. I did not want to stop reading his words with their easy flow washing over me. It is strange; the stories are about the end of our planet and should have depressed me. Instead, I found myself fascinated with the details and wanted to discover what happened next to the characters.

It is obvious the author cares about our planet and the climate change we are causing. Both stories are based on climate change, and each story is a possible outcome if we do not fix things soon.

The few places I found mistakes were, for the most part, in the writing style and the way the characters spoke. Therefore, I could not deduct any stars for the editing. The style and content warranted four stars alone. A star should also be given for starting at such a late time in life. So that gives Mr. Roger Mannon and his "Strange Stories II" a five out of five stars.

A word of caution here: There are a few places in the stories where the descriptions are graphic and violent. I would not recommend this one if you have a weak stomach. A person's religious leaning should not affect their enjoyment of this work.
