The Kingdoms of Hairpetah: The Quest to the Castle of Grislick by Chiedu Obusez is a fantasy novel that will engage fans of the genre. Anyone who is just beginning to read fantasy novels would fall in love with this novel as much as a veteran reader.

The Queen-witch’s curse destroyed the kingdoms of Gorrea and Azudehsia. For years the kingdom of Sadehsia ignored rumors of their own demise from the Queen-witch’s curse. Folks do not begin to take the rumors seriously until the Duke of Sadehsia has been murdered. In order to protect the kingdom, a relic hidden in the queen-witch’s domain must be retrieved. A group of brave heroes and wizards step forward to take on the quest to find this relic that leads them into a realm filled with darkness. They soon realize the horrors their kingdoms is experiencing might be coming from closer than they think.

The author creates a world which pulls readers into the story right from the beginning. The beginning of the story focuses on the history of the realms and curse that the queen-witch cast upon them. For some this might be boring and drawn out, but it sets the stage for what will happen later in the novel. However, once you make it past this historical portion of the book and return to the present, the story really picks up and gets intense.

Chiedu Obusez spends a lot of time on descriptions of cities, characters, and battles. These descriptions are so well done; readers are able to see things happening as if they were watching movies. These scenes are action packed and vivid keeping readers glued to the book, unable to put it down. Through everything Obusez discusses in the novel, he also addresses justice, plight of the poor and other social issues that may plague this city. In doing so, the author shows readers he put a lot of thought into the every detail no matter how minute it is.

While there are plenty of things that are amazing with this book, there are times when it seems long winded. Some scene could have been cut short and worked just as well. Some parts seemed as if they were added as an after-thought. Because of that, I give this book a 3 out of 4. There are some unanswered questions as well, but that also leads to the idea of the possibility of a second book.

Nice review, literarycat. The book seems interesting, but the some names sound unpronounceable. I'm not even trying on them.
