Goblin and One Eye from Glen Cook's The Black Company series. I probably favor Goblin over one eye, but they're both a pair of third string talents. They have to resort to cheap tricks and anonymity to survive in a world where heavy weights like The Limper could crush them without effort. They don't have the wisdom and grandeur of your Gandolfs and Dumbledores, or the cool witticisms of Harry Dresden. I like them because they are petty, bickering, crotchety old farts.

I would say Gandalf is my favorite wizard but the first wizard I ever read about was Merlin in The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart. I loved this book and went on to read book 2 - 4 of this Arthurian legend saga. The other books were The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day. These were influential reads for me when I was a teenager. I have loved Arthurian legend ever since and look forward to the new King Arthur movie that will be coming out soon. I also love the Harry Potter wizards!

Two part answer - my favorite adapted to screen wizard is definitely Severus Snape. His story is one of the very few fictional stories that can make me cry. My favorite wizard to read has to be Pug, the magician in Raymond Feist's Riftwar series. There are not many series that will keep me captivated and coming back for over twenty installments, but Pug and the other Midkemians certainly have!

Definitely Harry Dresden. The sarcasm and unfiltered comments are always entertaining. Who doesn't love a hero who is willing to take risks to save other people?

My favorite wizard is Dumbledore of course, but from the 5th Harry Potter book onwards, otherwise he doesn't do much. Although I wouldn't want to forget Kvothe from the Name of the Wind. His story is absorbing and the magic they do in his world is the best one I can think of, a sort of trade-off instead of the typical "oh I just do magic and I never get tired" thing.

Schmendrick, Peter Beagle's bumbling magician who only needed a cause, people who believed in him, and some self-confidence.

It may be a little evil to say but for me it has to be Voldemort. I love how they make him so interesting towards the dark side of things. He's brilliant but in a scary way.
