Fantasy books are widely accepted because of the freedom they render to one's imagination, and this book is no exception. Nexus Moons by Ron Root tells us about a Royal Magus who goes searching for his last kin, a nephew of whom he does not know. In a world where magic exists side by side with religion, Jarek Verity, a magician in charge of a high office in the King's Court, travels to search for his nephew. While on his quest, he encounters his best friend, Lavan, who is the headmaster of an arts university, a place where magic is taught. Jarek meets and reunites with his nephew, Gresham, who is training as a soldier, and he realizes that the boy has magic within him. However, while Jarek and his best friend, Lavan, venture out to test a theory concocted by Lavan, things go awry, and Lavan is kidnapped by a hideous demon. This demon is said to kidnap people with magical abilities and extract their magic from them in the hope of gaining it for himself. Jarek, devastated at the kidnapping of his friend, goes out to search for him, and he is accompanied by Lavan's driver. Gresham, who, together with a struggling mage and his waif, is also escorting Lady Rayna, a highborn woman who hasn't seen her mother or father since she was born, to visit her mother on a faraway island, meets his uncle on a legendary island, and they all set out to find Headmaster Lavan. Will they succeed in their quest to rescue Lavan and save him from the hands of the demon, or will they end up inviting unwanted demonic guests into their town, thereby causing chaos throughout the land? Check out this mind-blowing novel to find out.
The plot of this book was enthralling, as the storyline was filled with numerous events that made me cling to my knees. The book was fast-paced, though at times things were serene and the atmosphere was somewhat calm, particularly when they were traversing caves and mountains. One aspect of this book that I took delight in was character development. Jarek, the Royal Magus, feared heights at the beginning of the book, but by the end, he had traveled to heights even an average person wouldn't. Furthermore, the struggling mage, Hagley, was not perfect with his magic in the beginning, but he helped the travelers combat dangerous beasts by creating illusions and doing tricks only masters could attempt. Gresham was on a path of self-discovery, and he certainly found his focus after the journey to rescue Headmaster Lavan. Lest I forget, another aspect of this book that thrilled me was the romance between Gresham and Rayna, as they were fabulous as a couple. I enjoyed this book, and I'm sure all adventure lovers would too. If you're one of them, you too should check it out.
A negative aspect of this book was that it contained several errors that almost numbered up to ten. Although it seemed like it was professionally edited, I still managed to find about nine errors in the book. Another aspect that I didn't highly approve of was that the book was very lengthy, and I took a long time to read it entirely, as I got bored at some point due to the long time it took them to transverse the island. This, however, is from my standpoint. Apart from this, nothing else seemed to bother me about this book, as it was well-scripted and had an impressive story to tell.
All said and done, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars, and I deducted one star due to the reasons aforementioned. This book was professionally edited, but more work could have been done to ensure a smooth reading process, as I stumbled upon several errors. If one is patient enough, there is much delight in reading a book like this, and I'd advise any friend of mine to try it out.
Finally, I recommend this book to lovers of adventure, romance, magic, and fantasy. If you're one of them, this book is just the thing for you, as it encompasses all the aforementioned genres. Get this book, and thank me later.
