Review of Like a Lily Among the Thorns
Gabby had never felt like anyone special. Her father left her mother when she was quite young. Her mother never recovered from this hurt, and Gabby would watch her mother sit by the window waiting for her father to return with each passing day. One day, she realized her mother was not moving, and she called the ambulance. Her mother had died waiting for her father to return. She grew up without the love of her parents, and this made her adult life difficult. She found someone she could admire and look up to as a mom. This lady quickly offered her a place to stay when she got a notice from her landlord. This event started a chain reaction and great things started happening for Gabby. The father she never knew passed away and left a small hotel on his will for her.
When I first started reading this book, it was a bit confusing for me. I wasn't sure if the protagonist was making journal entries or not. It wasn't until Countess Anastasia was introduced that the story picked up and started making sense. It was highly captivating and hard to put down. I was excited when Countess Anastasia, the mother figure that Gabby looked up to, wanted to take her under her wings. There were a lot of heartwarming moments throughout the book. Gabby did not grow up with a family, but the people at her workplace and others around her became the family she needed. I liked the themes of love, family, friendship, and magic that the book contained.
I could not find anything to dislike in Like a Lily Among the Thorns by Karen S. Bell. The story was well-written and had a mixture of different genres. From mystery to romance to magic, this book has something for every reader. The main takeaway from the book was how climate change was damaging our planet. It was an eye-opening read and a call to action for every reader.
The characters in this book were textured and well-developed. My favorite character was Countess Anastasia. She was kindhearted and knew exactly how to help Gabby, who had had a hard life. I will give Like a Lily Among the Thorns a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited with only a few minor errors.
For people who believe that nature is important and should be protected, this is a book you would enjoy reading. I would also recommend it to people who like magical stories, as this book contained goddesses who are working to prevent disasters. Overall, this was quite an enjoyable read.
