A diverse team of six leave their lives on Earth behind and travel across space in search of a planet that could be worth mining. Before mining can occur, they have to know for certain that there is no intelligent life forms residing on that planet. That job falls on Cassie, the exobiologist. When she begins to study what appears to be mushrooms, she uncovers something none of them could have predicted or possibly prepared for. Mysterious events begin happening on this new planet, and tension arises among the crew. Cassie learns the motive behind their mission is not what she originally thought. She must choose whether to follow her orders in completing her mission or fight to do what she believes is right.

As far as science fiction go, W.D. County exceeds expectations with The Scent of Distant Worlds. The plot grabs attention at every page. It is evident that County put a lot of research into writing this novel. Every bit of science that is mentioned is explained well enough for the readers to follow the story but not too much to add confusion. I find that the ending is satisfying, unpredictable, and leaves no unanswered questions. Cassie fights an internal battle between her spirituality and her dedication to science that readers can relate to. My favorite part about The Scent of Distant Worlds is the theory on space travel. Whether this is based off real-life theories, or County made it up entirely; he made sure to put a lot of work into making it believable.

There is nothing I believe to be a negative aspect to this book. It is well-written and edited exceptionally. I did not find a single error while reading it.

I give this book a 4 out of 4 star rating. Not once while I was reading it, did I lose interest or want to put it down. County took the ideas in this book just far enough for it to stand out but did not over reach. He created characters that readers can identify with and a protagonist that everyone can root for. On top of being science fiction, there is mystery, suspense, drama, and romance.

I recommend this book to a mature audience of science fiction lovers, especially those that love space. Even those without interest in space, can find something they like. I believe that anyone who takes a chance on it will enjoy it.
