I agree about the TV show! I thought they dragged on too long too! I feel like in Book 4 she was just trying to grasp out for something to keep the series going. I am, however, looking forward to reading Lady Midnight to get to know Emma a little more.viridien wrote:I've read both, and honestly, the Mortal Instruments dragged on wayyyy too long. The Infernal Devices had a lot more romance, but it built up to a heartbraking conclusion in the last book. The Clockwork Princess was sobsfsdsfsfsfsfsgsfssfsfsf and I cried. So many times. I'll take TID over TMI anyday, thank you.
and i hate that tmi was made into a tv show, argggghh.

Yes! I love the 1800s and the manners they used towards Tessa. I feel like Clary is portrayed as a stronger character but only because she had to do things for herself. it's all the timeframe in which the book was set because was a very strong female.MegtheUnicorn wrote:I did things backwards. The Infernal Devices box set was given to me as a gift. I burned through them. I enjoyed the "old style" and the "manners" that were displayed. I found the Mortal Instruments to be a more shallow and predictable series.

I think this is because I adore the setting and era of The Infernal Devices, which is incredibly Victorian and that opens the wonderful world of Steampunk! So it gives me Victorian, Steampunk, Shadowhunters and early Clave/enclave dramas which beautifully set up The Mortal Instruments series and gives you a deeper understanding. But this is my personal opinion due to not yet disliking anything Cassandra Clare writes. I have finished Lady Midnight (the new shadowhunter series which I yet again love!) and reading the Shadowhunter Academy books (Love Simon)

I have The Mortal Instruments on my list to read this year, however I began reading the first in the series a couple years ago, and I was not impressed with Clary as a character. I had grown accustomed to Tessa doing everything she could, even with the constraints of society and her timeframe. Clary, as a modern female lead, came off as kind of whiney to me. I think I tried reading The Mortal Instruments too soon after reading The Infernal Devices, so that is why I am going to try again this year!
