An expedition for supernatural artefacts has its effects catapult thousands of years into the future posing danger to the descendant of Empress Helena. Genesis Isherwood returns home from university to bury her beloved grandfather Melvin Gourdeau. It surprises her when she sees her family unhinged by this death that so much grieves her. Later on, an encounter in her barn brings fourth unexplained events that set a clear revelation about her and her family. She must defeat evil while learning about her new-found self, all this in order to protect the world. She is charged to carry and protect a rare artefact descended from her ancestor, with only her childhood memories as guidance and her past to look up to. With the help of an unlikely accomplice together with her supposed guardian Marcus Reynolds, they fight evil the biblical way: by faith. Will Gen win against an enemy so potent yet so unknown? In this first book, one can only wonder.

Genesis Awakens is filled with change of scenes from person to person and from past to present. A twist of events and unexpected emotions. This, although quite confusing, is the utmost tool to raising different perspectives and understanding different characters and their stance in the overall story. Akorede Adekoya and Howard Haugom work to highlight the idea that history does in fact make up present in this book. Reading it felt like a surf through history whereby its engagement was so strong, it made me share the characters’ experiences from feeling to thought. I loved it because it played at Christianity which is a social factor and a largely believed religion. I would say through the book I gained a better understanding of it.

On the other hand, the book’s focus on those familiar with religion may need one to do prior research or just research while reading it so as to understand the events. This in essence I would say does not hinder its flow nor excitement factor.
I would say it is highly suited for an audience interested in historical fiction and adventure with a little bit of biblical elements. I would recommend it to anyone who finds ease in complex diction and varied settings. However, it contains events that might not suit children; mainly violence.

This book is a 4 out of 4 stars due to its smooth grammar and exciting events. If you love a twist to historical fiction, a Dan Brown kind of adventure, this would definitely be your cup of tea.
