Review of Like a Lily Among the Thorns
When Phil Bernstein left his wife, Mrs. Bernstein, and his daughter, Gabby, for another woman, Gabby's life never remained the same again. Her mother never even acknowledged her existence. It was with the help of neighbors that she was able to finish school. When she came back to show her mother her school leaving certificate, she found out something horrible had happened.
Gabby lived a simple life, and she was also happily working in a library. Everything changes when she gets an eviction notice. When her father dies, she receives his house as an inheritance. Anastasia offered to move in with her. On getting there, Gabby hears about the magical nature of the house and how the evil beings in it have been causing chaos. Beau told her everything she needed to know about the house, her father, the goddesses, and the evil beings. In order to stop this evil being, they had to find a book.
Like a Lily Among the Thorns proved to be a very interesting fantasy-fiction novel. There are so many things to love about this book by Karen S. Bell. I must commend the author for her writing style; it was unique and elegant. It was as if I was among the characters in this book. I love the plotline of this story; it was well organized. I didn’t expect the magical change of events in this book. The characters were also well developed. Whenever Karen introduced a new character, she always gave the character's history. The differences in the characters' personalities made way for realistic interactions throughout the book.
My favorite character in the book was Gabby. I love her because of her optimism. She never allows a bad situation to get to her. For instance, when she had an upset stomach in the book, she recited her mantra, and before long, her upset stomach subsided. I was so happy to find out that Gabby was surrounded by people who cared and would always support her. I also think this book, in some way, is trying to inform us about the climatic changes and the effects it has.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. I found minimal grammatical errors in it. This leads me to the conclusion that this book was professionally edited. The author should be commended for this.
Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I didn’t give a lower rating because I enjoyed every aspect of this book. I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy fiction. Generally, lovers of fiction would find this an interesting read. Anyone looking for an amazing book to read would appreciate this one.
