Review of Time's Up
Time's Up is a novel penned by Mike Ross. The book was intentionally divided into one hundred and eighteen chapters. It comprises three hundred and eighty-six pages. The book is filled with suspense and kept me on my toes till the last page. It introduced the main character as Dr. Yasenia Belen-chavez, popularly known as Dr. Chavez.
Mike tells the story of an alien spaceship visiting the UN complex in one of their meetings, relating to them individually in their mother tongue. The spaceship told them of the depopulation set to occur from the radiation of the sun. This means that humans will soon become extinct. It also offered them a solution to evacuate 1500 colonists to a different planet. Dr. Chavez was to serve as their direct contact. This sprung many controversies and diverse opinions from different parts of the world. Some viewed it as a hoax, some who witnessed it believed it to be real, and some countries like Brazil, which had the no contact law had no means of hearing the news. Russia believed the act to emanate from NATO as a ploy to wipe out Russians. Can the human race really become extinct?
There are so many aspects of this book that I enjoyed. The storyline was intriguing, engaging, and suspense-filled. It was very relatable as it referred to the current world crisis. This book seemed packed with recent information on the Boko Haram in Nigeria, ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria, FARC rebels in Columbia, and so on. This gave the book an aura of originality. The simple language employed made it very easy and understandable. Mike used some foreign language which he also gave its interpretation. It lessened my burden on checking the meaning in translation apps.
Another positive aspect is the insight into the politics of China. Mike did not mince words in giving a detailed view of their laws and how they control every section of the media. The story may be fictitious, but this view was real and accurate. This gave the book a bit of originality. The characters were also relatable. I enjoyed the zeal and resilience of Dr. Chavez. Her ability to go outside her scope of work to try and save humanity is quite endearing.
The only negative aspect of the book envisaged is the division of chapters. It was pretty lengthy, and I would have appreciated it if some chapters were merged. I felt some details could have been skipped or, better still, shortened. This may not be a general issue for everyone, but it affected my enjoyment of the book. I found a few errors in this book; nevertheless, I still consider it professionally edited.
I will rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. My reason is because of the lengthy chapters, which at some point bored me. It wouldn't have been an issue if the book had more spice to it. I will gladly recommend this book to movie producers for a Netflix original. This book is also recommended to other persons who enjoy thrillers.
