Official Review: The Silver Dragon Guild Part One

“The Silver Dragon Guild Part One” wasn’t a book I was highly intrigued by when reading the synopsis, but after giving it a shot I found it to be unexpectedly entertaining. Filled with action, mystery, and a bit of top-secret spy shenanigans, this story projects you right into a realistic and thrilling sea of adventure. Not only was I surprised at how exhilarating this book was, but also how visionary this new author is and how he has done a decent job with his first installment as a writer. Mind you, he still needs to work on editing and could have developed the story a little more, but it’s not bad for a first book. There are themes of trust, friendship, and honesty that develop this book into a dynamic story that one who enjoys Sci-Fi and Fantasy should pick up and read!
Mik Fuasten has just been accepted into MIDA (Military Intelligence and Deployment Agency) in hopes of becoming a special agent, at the envy of many others and his cousin Jace. His primary guardian, Aunt Brinlee, doesn’t necessarily approve, though, and urges him to rethink his plans. Nevertheless, he has dreamed of this opportunity and wouldn’t let it pass on by. He and his cousin Jace head via train to the academy in Seafar City with the only thing his parents left him, a mysterious dragon medallion.
As Jace and Mik travel to the academy that awaits them, two villains in black attire attack them in an attempt to recover the medallion that for some reason is extremely important. When they finally get to Seafar City, Mik must find sanctuary in the academy and uncover the significance of the medallion before his unknown enemies come back to retrieve it. Mik deals with thought-provoking questions: What powers does the amulet hold? Why do others want it so badly? Will the spy academy train Mik to fight off the rebel forces that are watching him? The more important question, though, is whether or not Mik will figure it out before it’s too late.
Although this book was enjoyable, it had some errors. First off, I was unsure who the targeted audience was as it was more so on the side of teen fiction, yet it was short for a modern day teenage series. Then again, it had mature language so it could be more of a young adult book. Also, the main character was 20 years old, but being 20 I felt like this story was a little simple and probably would have been more gripping if the character was younger and less mature. There were some grammatical mistakes that need to be fixed as well, but not enough to distract from the story. I also had some trouble when the author failed to imply with a space in between paragraphs when the viewpoint changed (i.e. in chapter two when the focus switches between the two villains and Mik and Jace). Otherwise the story was well written; it just needs to be tidied up.
I rate it a 3 out of 4 stars. I loved how electrifying and original this book was with going to a spy academy. Also it was a smart idea to throw in that mysterious amulet with peculiar powers making it more than just another story about special schools. I didn’t necessarily like how the author sort of threw in cuss words nonchalantly though. It just seemed a little much at times and a little forced, like the author wasn’t too sure where that language was most effective, but it was mostly mild so I didn’t necessarily mind it. I do think if he cleaned up the cussing, however, it would make a great children’s fiction book. I also wished it was a bit longer and that the author had gone into a little more plot development especially with the training at the academy, but otherwise I would recommend this book to anyone finding the storyline interesting. I will most likely read the next book in the series too.
