Review of The Queen of Xana
The Queen of Xana by Fred Pilcher is a novel that follows the young queen Agatha’s life. We connect with her character right from her birth to her death. From her childhood days young Agatha had been an empathetic and compassionate child. She always enjoyed being with her people and learning about them, rather than knowing about them from behind the safety of her palace walls. Her fairy godmother showered special gifts on her when she was born. Agatha is put to the ultimate test when the evil sorcerer Magi takes over the kingdom of Xana. She is required to identify her prince and couple with him in order to destroy the sorcerer. She very diligently manages to do so. From then onwards Queen Agatha and her prince rule over Xana side-by-side to ensure the prosperity of its people.
What I loved most about this book is that the essence of Queen Agatha is underlined at every point in the story. Everything that she does emphasizes her compassion and highlights her love for her people. She is the kind of person who acknowledges the strengths of others and strives to improve them and eliminate any weaknesses.
Through this book we can see the positive impact that the actions of one person can have on society. Queen Agatha, though compassionate, always found a way to eradicate corruption and evil from her kingdom. She did not hesitate when it came to punishment and punished aristocrats, commoners, and children all alike. She is a very intuitive person and sees the true nature of those around her and this helps her in selecting the members for her board of councilors. She even recruits children if she feels that they have ideas that can improve the country.
There is nothing that I dislike about the book. It is a wonderful work of fiction. It has been very well edited. I love the portrayal of the children in this book. The author shows us that even at a young age children can possess great wisdom. For the elements of magic, sorcery, empathy, and romance, I rate The Queen of Xana4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book for those who like fantasy coupled with democracy and governance. This book offers the perfect blend of natural leadership, foreign associations, and compassion. If you are someone who likes a fast moving story which gives you a sense of adventure as well as a taste of what it means to run a country, then this book is for you.
