Review of Legacy
Legacy by Sean T. Smith is a science fiction novel about the origin of mankind and a deep grudge between human ancestors and an extra-terrestrial being that last for 35.000 years. And now, in the year 2046, a group consisting of 7 people and an extraterrestrial being called David will try to put a stop to a plan of mass destruction that will obliterate David’s planet. With Earth being the launching place of the weapon, will be obliterated as well as the side effect.
The story started from Jessica’s perspective, one of the protagonists of the story. A very intelligent and beautiful young woman that cared mostly about her thesis and research, she’s off to Las Vegas the Sin City for a seminar when unprecedented things start happening. A 25-megaton nuclear bomb was detonated underground and put Nevada and southern California in a severe power outage. This put the NRS (Nuclear Regulatory Services) and NRC on high alert, especially the director of NRC as he himself supervised and give an order for all the nuclear weapons to be dissembled and put out of commission. As the NRC begin their immediate investigations on the nuclear explosion, Jessica had an unexpected encounter at the campus library. She visited the library at night with her friend, Bryce Costa only to find that they were not the only ones in the library. In there, stands a tall man with pale skin and dark brown hair, as they exchange greetings with the man little that they know that this encounter will change their life forever. And the story goes around from everyone's perspective as they gather and met each other through coincidence or a series of accidents, each trying to uncover the mysteries of David and his story of the origin of mankind and his purpose of visiting Earth. With a series of investigations, scientific knowledge, and Bryce’s dreams they come closer to finding the truth and putting a stop to thousands of year old evil plan, or is it?
This book is really fun to read, the author really did an amazing job in this book. The story is fast-paced and the character's interactions and dialogue are really entertaining. As a sci-fi genre book, this book is not a heavy book to read, it’s actually quite the opposite as most of the explanations is easy to understand, and I find that as one of the strong point of this book as you can have fun reading this and also gain a bit of new insight and knowledge about microbiology and astrophysics, etc.
The story is engaging, the twist in the plot has me going from “is that it?” to “how are they going to fix all this???”. But I was hoping for more development of character for Nwarht, as the main villain of the story I was hoping to have more insight on his background from his perspective so that I could understand better his reason for revenge. Because Nwarht hold his vengeance for a very long time, depicting he was angry but I didn’t really understand what is the source of his revenge to hold it for so long. His reason for revenge is not really clear to me, as he was depicted as someone with high intelligence. That is why his character didn't strike as completely evil to me.
This book is well written, my favorite characters are Jessica and Bryce, their interactions are really cute and funny. I really enjoyed the story even though the ending felt a bit rushed. And I also notice several typos, is on page 96 where it is written “Bryce stumbled and suddenly he was falling though the floor of the factory” as ‘though’ doesn’t fit and suppose to be written as ‘through’ and another on page 358 where it is written “JW hesitated for a moment than easily leaped the five-foot gap” where the ‘than’ is supposed to be written ‘then’.
Based on everything above I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, there were errors but there’s nothing I dislike about the book and the author really did a great job as I really enjoy reading this book. This book is easy to understand and the story is intriguing. While I’m sure those who loved sci-fi will surely like this book, I really recommend this book to those who are new to science fiction as I’m sure this book will appeal to them.
