Review of You Glow Girl
Are you stuck in a job you hate? Do you find yourself unable to leave an unhealthy relationship because it’s easier to stay? In You Glow Girl, author Racheal Butrum says that it’s not okay to settle for things just because it’s easy.
Despite being a bright person, Racheal has had her share of problems in life. At some point in her life, she found herself stuck in a meaningless job, questioning how she ended up in her position and why she continues to stay despite disliking her job. After giving it some thought, she realizes that it might be caused by her lack of motivation. Now what? Now, she does everything to escape her predicament and start her journey to a happier and healthier mental place. The best part is that she takes us with her!
After reading several emotionally packed books, You Glow Girl was exactly what I needed to read to unwind. Racheal is a bubbly and positive person and her personality shows through in this refreshing book. As a person who tends to think negatively, I benefitted a lot from Racheal’s candid statements about caring too much about what others think and being generally positive. You Glow Girl made me reflect on my pessimistic tendencies and negative outlooks on life. Additionally, it made me want to be as carefree and optimistic as the author.
As much as I loved the book, there were instances in the book where I had to disagree with the author. She made a statement about getting a new job if it makes you feel burned out and it doesn’t make you smile anymore. While I agree with her, leaving a job is not as simple as it seems, especially if the person is dependent on that income. I also felt that there were some instances in the book where the author implies that negativity can be erased by simply turning a frown upside down.
Nonetheless, I really enjoyed reading this book and my reading experience was a refreshing one. Therefore, I award You Glow Girl a well-deserved rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well edited, as I only found a few minor errors that did not warrant a star deduction. It is highly recommended to those looking for a sweet, positive read, but just about anybody can benefit from reading this book. I would not recommend it to those who dislike books that promote absolutely no negativity, as this book contains statements that can be viewed as mindless positivity.
