The Scent of Distant Worlds by W.D. County follows a team of space explorers from Earth landing on a planet with the potential for colonization. The story follows Cassie, a biochemist, and the team as they explore the world for signs of life and other potential resources. When Cassie finds a grove of what the crew assumes to be mushrooms, she studies them to determine if they have what the mission designated “life.” With so much at stake, will problems arise, or will everyone get what they went on the mission for? What unknowns will they encounter, and what will be the repercussions?

This book is exceptionally well written and edited. I enjoyed reading this book as it took on a completely different way of thinking about space exploration. The depth of the characters was well written, and the connections and motives were believable. The Scent of Distant Worlds took what could have been a very cliche first distant world exploration and turned it into a story that is so believable it makes you think if this is even something we should be exploring. I absolutely loved how in-depth County went with something as commonplace as senses and completely turned it on its head.

The one negative I have for this novel is that the main character, Cassie, appears extremely naive at times. I love that she has a pure heart when it comes to the science and exploration of this new planet, but the motives of others aren’t always the same. For most of the book, she assumes that everyone is on the same page as her with no ulterior paths or directives. She is a biochemist, so I wanted her to be more realistic when working with others, not in her field.

I rate The Scent of Distant Worlds by W.D. County a 4 out of 4 stars. This story surprised me; I read the entire book straight through. It was a very thoughtfully written book that makes you take a step back and think about all of the potential consequences of space travel. I also absolutely loved the ending, and it was not what I expected as I was reading.

If you are a science fiction lover, this is definitely worth the read. There is a little spirituality discussed throughout the book, but I wouldn’t consider it a central focus. There is some mature content, so I wouldn’t necessarily think it for the young adult audience; although the story is so thought-provoking, it would be worth the read for that alone. Overall, it is a superb read that I will be reading again in the future.
