Review by Kelea Wood -- Superbugs by Tayma Tameem
Fall into a pandemic era fantasy novel with Tayma Tameem’s book, Superbugs. This epic adventure will certainly hit close to home as you enter a world ravaged by countless pandemics. This book is a dystopian lovers dream. Follow the point of view of multiple main characters, some more likable than others, as you encounter cannibal gangs, a corrupt government, cults, human testing, and a world so unlike our own that you will end the book grateful for the things that are going wrong in your life, because none of them could compare to the horror you just read. Tameem finds a great balance of adventure and horror, with just enough likability and relatability to keep you interested.
Superbugs is filled with characters from all walks of life, which makes the book feel relatable to many different readers, the flow of the story moves at a good pace and there is not much downtime. Several of the characters are extremely likable, and I could even see myself being friends with them in real life. This really helped me connect to the story, and often I found it difficult to put down.
On the other hand, many of the characters are predictable, and one of the primary disliked characters comes across as a very over the top, unbelievable chauvinist, regularly making comments about the uselessness of women. This character left a bitter taste in my mouth and I found myself anxious to finish the chapters that followed him and his flawed mentality. The book ends abruptly, setting itself up for a sequel, but it feels too abrupt. One second a character is in mortal peril, the next second the book ends without a warning.
Despite any flaws, Tameen brings to life a story that is difficult to put down. I would certainly read it again and would rate it 4 out of 4. The flow of the story, the changes of point of view to explore other aspects of this cruel world, the character building that happens as well as the concept behind the pandemic era all play a part in this rating.
This book would be a great read for teenagers and up. It deals with sensitive topics such as cannibalism, corruption of governments, human testing, including testing on babies, cults, and otherwise difficult topics. Anyone who enjoys dystopian era books, with a science fiction/fantasy base would probably enjoy this book. It certainly has its fair share of violence, but otherwise lacks any profanity or sexual situations.
