Review by PrajnaMads -- The Stolen Heir by Tayma Tameem
The Stolen Heir by Tayma Tameem is a story about family and duty, told in a web of suspense and intrigue. This book gets warring families and royals right in a way that others sometimes don’t: by capturing the emotions and responsibility the royals grapple with, as well as the bitterness and helplessness of their citizens. Despite these two being on opposite ends of the spectrum, Tameem makes us feel sympathetic to both, and gets us to feel the same sense of powerlessness to destiny that they all feel. From the very first paragraph of the prologue to the cliffhanger at the end, this book is riveting and enjoyable, and I’m sure that I’ll hunt down the sequel when it comes out.
This book has you at the edge of your seat, deeply invested in all the characters and their successes. It is excellently written and very well paced. The story doesn’t go too fast for you to miss anything important, but just slow enough to build up the suspense and the plot. The editing and writing is good, making it a very smooth read.
The only barrier to fully enjoying it might be understanding this new universe, which is slowly unfolded in an fantastic way that integrates exposition with the actual plot, keeping it interesting. Once the reader has a good grasp on this world, its components, and its people, the book is very hard to put down.
I would give this book a 4 out of 4. The writing is careful and the story is gripping. The book ends in a pivotal point that makes you desperate for more. This book would be an excellent read for all ages: appropriate for children and interesting to teens and adults.
