We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End by Matthew Tysz is the third book of the We are Voulhire series. Our three protagonists have barely recovered from the adventures in Virko and are still oblivious to the multiple threats hanging over Voulhire. Unaware of the Eiodi’s true identity, Demetrius attempts without success to alert him to the tragedy that has happened in Virko. Galen is learning his uncle's trade diligently and Rowan is... being Rowan. After barely escaping an attack by the Riva Rohavi our heroes seek help and safety in Soulhire. But they may be heading directly into more danger than they have faced in the past. Lord Meldorath is also on the way to Soulhire determined that nothing should hinder his ultimate plan. But he is not Soulhire’s biggest threat. As the extent of Voulhire’s problems dawns on our heroes, we are also beginning to get hints about the mystery surrounding these three friends and their pasts.

The series seems to have entered a new phase in this book. The threats have become considerably bigger and so have the targets. The pacing is fast, with hardly any breathing space between the action scenes. I was hooked from the first page till the last and was totally invested in the fate of the protagonists. This book has everything I enjoyed about the first two and then some. Complex character motivations, politics in all its messy glory and brilliant plotlines, make this book a fascinating read.

The book has so many characters, new and returning, but all of them come alive by the author’s deft characterisation. I must also mention the brilliantly detailed world-building. A world in which humans are not the dominant species is not a new concept in fantasy but, the powerful Emperor of lullabies is on an entirely different plane of existence.

I loved the clashing of personalities and loyalties. Imperfect and realistic characters reflect the effort the author has put into writing each character. A kind and just man should make the perfect king in theory, but what about his competence in keeping the kingdom safe? When enemies more powerful than he can imagine are at the gates, his ideals begin to look like foolishness. When the trusted adviser turns traitor for what he believes to be the greater good, a greedy and lecherous politician is forced to become the voice of reason.

I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn’t find any negatives, but I wasn’t really trying to find any. If you loved the first two books in the series, you will love this one too. There is a lot of violence and gore as in the first two books. I cannot predict where the plot is going, but I am confident this series is going to be one exhilarating roller coaster ride.
