Review by lexitianna -- Shield Down by William de Berg
That was such a good book!!! It had so many facts and detailed relevant information to what's happening in our world that it seemed nonfiction. It even cited a surplus of sources that went into further detail about each fact in the notes at the bottom of each page. I checked some of the sites cited and they were educational and interesting. It was exciting to learn about what might happen to our world.
Shield Down dives into pole reversal, mass extinction, the moon landing, underground cities, etc. It includes romance but isn't overly focused on it. There's good solid information on what you need to survive living the underground. This was an unexpected and gratefully accepted treat, along with pockets of information about science, technology and astronomy. I LOVE how good the author is at teaching and how abundantly he does it. I enjoyed the educational aspect as much or more than the entertainment. I also liked how intensely the author has researched it and that they included that research on each page. Anyone who enjoys end-of-the-world books or survival guides would thoroughly enjoy this, as it has a surplus of tips about what to do should some type of radioactive disaster occur.
Side note- this book's turned me into a survivalist, I think. It's SO well researched and convincing lmao
It's definitely got a somewhat been-done-before plot with a scientist being called in by NASA to help when a last-minute disaster strikes, and the side love plot, but it's still good and fun to read and easy to get into a trance reading. William de Berg's word choice, the potential realness of the plotline and details, and the useful tips that you learn from it pull you in quite well.
My least favorite parts were how selfish and ableist some of the people's decisions were. I didn't feel like they were kind enough to each other:/. Also, I wish the girls weren't treated as birthing objects
and I wish they had more black people at the retreat. Although the book addressed it and it was understandable, still, I didn't like that part quite as much.
A lot of books don't have a real ending where they fully share what happens to everyone, but this one does, which is nice. Real closure. Except for one particular character, who I was emotionally invested in, but her story isn't told like the others.
Ultimately, I really enjoyed the book. It seems well-edited and was fun for me to read. I rate it a hot 4 out of 4. I would read this book again.
