Review by Chogy -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in this series. It introduces many new characters that give new shape and structure to the ongoing story. Like the title, the book revolves mostly around the city and people of Virko. We are introduced to the Lord of Virko, a few elites, how the city of Virko operates, the kind of people present in the city and their beliefs. There is also a glimpse of the spiritual world.
The industrial city of Virko is not as simple as it seems. Galen, Rowan and Demetrius travel to Virko and meet with the old Lord of Virko, who is on his death bed and asks them to keep an eye on his son. To say that his son is peculiar is an understatement. It seems he is unable to let go of his past and holds grudges. His personality seems to be greatly influenced by his childhood. There is also Lord Kayden who seems to be intrigued by the darker and unknown side of the world. There is unspoken evil present in the depths of Virko which is hidden well and for a long time. The “advanced” people of Virko disregard religion and its followers. We also get to know the kind of person the current Eiodi is and his beliefs. There is also a hint about the mysterious rocks found in Aclovia. On the other part of Voulhire, Lord Meldorath continues his sinister plans.
This book is forming a base for the next books. We are getting to know some interesting characters and some promising antagonists. The sudden turn of events shone light on hidden depths of characters; which keep the readers very interested.
What I liked about this book is that many events were occurring at the same time. It was not focusing on a single event. There were series of events occurring simultaneously yet independently that were affecting each other. I liked how author describes characters and incidents in vivid detail. Also, the storytelling in different point of views provided insight of the feelings of different characters. I am very fond of how author is bringing magic, science and spiritualism together to create an interesting story.
What I least liked about this book, is how it was kind of confusing in the beginning. I was sort of disoriented, as to where it was relating to the first book. But, after reading a few pages, I was back on track. So, I regard it as a minor inconvenience.
Since I could not find any errors, I believe this book to be professionally edited. With all above mentioned points, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars . I would recommend it to readers interested in fantasy and magic. Also, with increasing use of profanity and violence, I would recommend it to older readers.
