We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a science fiction and a fantasy novel. It is the first book in We are Voulhire series. Life takes an unexpected turn that leads the protagonist to a world full of adventure, magic, and mysterious happenings. The book revolves around the small but envious, Kingdom of Voulhire.
King Wilhelm, King of Voulhire, stressed that his four sons would plot against him to acquire the throne for themselves. He removed the four princes from his palace, giving each of them one small chain of islands and enough army to defend themselves, but with each passing year, the war-stricken lands deteriorated.
Galen is a simple lad from the Land of Princes where everyday life is a struggle with starvation or death. When he finds the first opportunity to escape from this treacherous place, he took it. To acquire the inheritance of his uncle needs to travel to a small city, Magnum Caleum. As he arrives is mesmerized to watch cheerful people, with lots of food on the place and freedom. There he finds, Rowan, his uncle’s executor helps him adjust to his new environment. While the King faces conflicts in his Mianoran council, will they go against him? Will the powerful mage, Meldorath create havoc?
The book has a map at the beginning, which helps to visualize the rich and scenic Kingdom of Voulhire and also helps to follow through the places mentioned. I am very fond of books with maps attached. The author is successful in maintaining the suspense and thrill, which makes the readers hooked in their places. Tysz has written beautifully with enticing details and skillfully placed the twists in each chapter. It is interesting to watch how the characters have developed and done their part in the story.
The book is in both first-person and third-person narrative styles, but it gets a little confusing and hard to follow, but not enough to drop even a single star. I couldn’t find any grammatical errors and conclude that the book is well-edited. There is a little use of profane language that would be appropriate for the adult readers.
Hence, I rate this book a full 4 out of 4 stars. There is nothing to dislike about this fascinating book. The author has done a great job. I would recommend this to all the fantasy lovers, who have an eye for a good storyline and captivating characters.
