Review by Aaron Ambers -- The King of May by Matthew Tysz
The King of May by Matthew Tysz is an engaging chronicle; detailing a balance of power between gods and humans. The series of events that played out after the murder of Oak (the creator of the earth) by Ashley and Scholar earned them widespread fame. They afterwards, proceeded to exterminating other gods, whose existence proved to be a threat to the sanity and peace of the earth. Cattleprod is another human who leaves the gods bewildered; through his conquest of a god's territory. The King of May however, proves to be a formidable opponent. Matthew Tysz continued the prose - The King of May from an earlier novel - The Turn (which tells of the chaos that ensued on the earth due to Oak's death).
The outcome of the battle between Cattleprod and The King of May will determine the future of many lives and the peace of the earth. The Sun god (The King of May) battles Cattleprod and his army in a fierce combat, along with his military officials. The battle turns sour against The King of May, when Alden (the god of vegetation), began manipulating vegetation to fight against the Sun god's forces. With his forces down, The King of May retreats into his palace. Cattleprod's team alongside Cattleprod advance into the palace to find and eliminate the Sun god. The eventual discovery and termination of the god brought about rejoicing and gladness among the inhabitants of the locale.
Matthew Tysz articulately defines each character. The narrative was also easily understood. This fictional novel narrates the coexistence of gods and humans, the gods have human followers and subjects which is primarily due to the fact that they wield extraordinary capabilities. I was endeared to Cattleprod; the protagonist, his attributes and feats made him everyone's hero, a good diplomat and leader. Ashley and Scholar were great characters too - the greatly feared and revered god slayers. Scholar's decision not to eliminate Cattleprod on The King of May's instruction at the battlefield, influenced Cattleprod's ultimate victory over the Sun god.
The editing was professionally done. I, therefore, award this text a 4 out of 4 stars. The narrative was interesting, the conversations were pretty cool, the ability to conceal emotions in a discourse and setting the other party disoriented was quite appealing, lol. A good example was Cattleprod's dialogue with The King of May before the eventual combat between them.
This book is recommended to adults. Folks who are endeared to fictional tales, and who may want to peruse a tale that discusses conflict between gods and humans. The book contain scenes that capture mature themes. It also contains several cases of vulgarity. I look forward to reading the next book in this series by Matthew Tysz. I must affirm Matthew Tysz makes a good writer.
