Review by Sou Hi -- We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End
We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End is the third part of the series written by Matthew Tysz. After the decease of Eiodi Gadesh, the very same man who executed him took over his position. Now that Yamon Soul had fallen under his control, Meldorath turned to his primary target: Soulhire, the capital of the kingdom.
At the same time, in an attempt to fix Virko, Galen's party tried to look for an audience with the king. Still, that was impossible, since even the nobles would have to wait for months. But thanks to the help of Rowan's mother, they were able to attend a trial held in the presence of Wilhelm. Coincidentally, this trial piqued Galen's interest, as they debated whether Voulhire should accept refugees from the Lands of the Princes. It was an effort to save the people there from suffering under the reign of their rulers. Unfortunately, the Emperor of Lullabies didn't seem to fancy Voulhire's idea, which was why he sent a fierce warning to the heart of Voulhire. Forced to face with the past, what would Galen do?
Again, the storyline transits smoothly despite being divided into minor episodes. The author did a good job describing the scenes, turning the book into an action movie. This fiction is a great page-turner with twists and turns, making you so curious about the outcome. You will always be eager to know what happens next.
The solid development of the principal characters' personality is my most favorite aspect. Galen's naivety has somehow lessened, as he seems more mature and even snappy with his anger outburst. Demetrius and Rowan also argue less, even though the sarcasm remains unchanged. Moreover, as their pasts unfold, the trio becomes more honest with each other and with themselves. I'm glad to know that Demetrius and Rowan get to narrate their own section as well, showing us more of their feelings. Another good point is that the Mianoran council and its chancellor will have to pay for their underhanded plots. And it looks like even the invincible Riva warriors will flee in fear, since they have to face a stronger opponent. Karma is never late after all!
However, unlike the prequels, this third part feels heavier and somber because of the political conspiracies. The humorous atmosphere that usually surrounds Galen's group can hardly be seen. The sovereigns change dramatically, more people perish, and war is drawing near. Those who are sensitive to these details may not enjoy them. But those who love sci-fi and fantasy will definitely like the book.
Despite the gloomy tone, I will give this copy 4 out of 4 stars. It's because the book is nice and professionally edited with only a few grammar errors.
