It could be that kindergarten teacher that taught you all about the letters of the alphabet or that doctor that saved your life when an ailment came knocking at your door. It could also be a book, as it is the case for Charlotte in The Book by S. A. Wadhwa. She stumbles upon a mysterious book that opens a door in her life that was previously closed. What mystery does the book carry? Buy a copy of this book, and you’ll surely find the answer.

I loved the fact that Wadhwa uses a first-person voice approach in writing the book. It allowed me to associate with the characters and relate to a few of their encounters. It also placed me in a better position in understanding the plot since I felt like I was the one telling the story. For instance, during Finn’s narration of his encounter with a dragon, I could picture myself on that field herding the goats.

The author’s choice to include stories within a story in the book is a move I found creative. Wadhwa flavours up the plot with a couple of tales that I found accommodating since they are the establishment on which she assembles the primary story. They also played a tremendous role in keeping my attention in the book as they are captivating.

The book has numerous imperfections in its composition. I had a challenging experience reading through the pages since I needed to stop and do the redresses at whatever point an error emerged. As a result, my reading pace was slow. The mistakes also made the book a boring read.

There is also a repetition of specific lines of text in the book that I found confusing. For example, the following sentence appears in several pages of the book: “But by then I had concentrated on the newspaper and the pot had simply dropped back on the table...”. It made those particular pages seem similar to me even though they were not.

The erotic content in the book is on a low scale, and the use of profane words minimal. I also didn’t stumble upon any religious discussions in the book that might make it an uncomfortable read for readers from any particular faith.

I rate the book 2 out of 4 stars. It is a captivating and engrossing read that left me longing for the next one in the series. Nevertheless, I deducted two stars due to the numerous mistakes it has. I recommend it to lovers of reads on magic and dragons. ****** The Book View: on Bookshelves | on Amazon
