Enif by Russ Berg is about Jerry Humphrey from Tucson Arizona. Jerry is a geologist struggling to open a business with his fiancé Mandy. One early morning, encouraged by his friends and against Mandy’s wishes, he decides to sneak off to a mysterious area in the Chiricahua Mountains in hopes of finding out if thermal emissions cause some of the strange things that happen there. After arriving he finds unusual looking rocks, when he moves them around a cave appears in the mountainside. Inside the cave he meets a few new friends Julean and Andromeda. Jerry must face Totenkop and many other foes throughout 7 different worlds if he wants to earn his place on Enif.

Enif was a great story. The worlds Berg describes are unbelievable; I never got tired of reading about them. I could imagine everything very clearly in my head. I really enjoyed how Jerry had to explore everything; it gave me a chance to really see the worlds the author created. The gifts he was given were very interesting, wisdom beads, apus flowers, and the enchanted book, one of my favorites being the ring of Tauri, capable of summoning an army. Some of my favorite creatures Jerry faced was the family of stone wolfs, and Draco the dragon. The battles were not drawn out, some of the best being with Draco and Totenkop. The battle with Totenkop was a little bit gory but not off-putting.

One of the things that drew me to the book was the dragon on the cover. Everything about it made me want to read the story. I loved that Enif was based on a dream that Berg had, the fact that the author also studies the mysteries of the universe makes it so much more interesting. It made me wonder if some of the story’s more practical moments could be possible or real.

I did not notice any spelling or grammar errors. There were no instances of profanity or inappropriate scenes. The only issue I had with the book is that it was a little long. For people who don’t normally read fantasy it might be a little too much to take in.

I rate Enif by Russ Berg 4 out of 4 stars. It had incredible battles, beautiful worlds to explore and extraordinary creatures to see. I would recommend this book to anyone with a love for fantasy, aside from younger kids due to its length.
