We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a story set in the ancient times. Matthew Tysz starts off the narration by introducing Galen, a young man from a very poor kingdom who is left in possession of his great uncle’s wealth and estate after he passes away. This prompts his move from his home to the mighty nation of Voulhire where he meets Rowan. They immediately get along and a friendship is formed between the two. Galen quickly adapts and is attracted to the art of blacksmithing. Along with his interest in being a blacksmith, he also shows interest in magic. Only time will tell whether he will be able to master these crafts.
However, Voulhire’s peace and stability is short-lived. This is after their arch enemies, the Riva Rohavi, attack the town of Hillport. This catches the people by surprise since the Riva haven’t attacked Voulhire in a long time and were suspected to have fallen apart. Unknown to many, they have formed a coalition with a powerful and dreaded mage who was banished from Voulhire. With his power, they are a formidable force and are determined to destroy Voulhire. Being the first book in the series, we are left to wonder what Galen will do to defend this great nation, a new place he calls home.
The book is entertaining and immensely captivating. The author builds an amazing plot that is solid and rich. Rich because it branches into different interrelated parts that add flavor to the whole story. Despite this, it is relatively simple and doesn’t take long to grasp. He also uses a wide range of tools to spice up the story. For example, he frequently switches between first and third person narration. This helps create variation in the story hence making it less monotonous. Besides, it helps the reader better understand each character in their own unique way.
Furthermore, the author is keen to touch on real world problems. This makes the story more appealing to readers as they relate to it and are curious to see the approach and steps taken to solve the problem.
The book is professionally edited and lacks spelling and grammatical errors. Based on the above, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
In conclusion, this book would be most suitable for people interested in historical fiction. Besides, the book also touches on magic and its elements. It is a joy to read and will keep you hooked from start to finish. Grab a copy.
