“Zelspar and the Magicians” is the third book in the “The Legend of the Dragonchild” series written by Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait. It is a skillfully woven novel that will encapture readers until the very end.
The story is about a dragon named Zelspar, who is protecting the dragons of Urthe with extraordinary magical powers inherited from his ancestors. Other characters are: a Master Magician named Perthorn, and the antagonist Flemgorr, an ambitious magician eager to snatch Perthorn’s prestigious title for himself. He goes to great lengths to try to kill Perthorn and Zelspar. After an ambush with Flemgorr, Perthorn discovers that the balance of the universe is disturbed and that it’s up to him with the help of Zelspar to bring things back in order. Zelspar’s character is the most interesting one, since his only motive has always been that of safe-guarding the dragons, and to be at peace with the humans.
The characters were all sketched with elaborate personalities. Perthorn resonates as a great warrior. Zelspar with his bravery and quick-thinking makes him an admirable protagonist. Zelspar steals the show by being an uncannily wise dragon with a streak of undying loyalty. He travels through various portals to restore balance in Urthe, along with Perthron and his apprentice Kiel. Flemgorr is a well portrayed villian written with depth.
This book is a great piece of work with lots of meaning to it. It is very eloquent. The writing style flows easily and the world is rich and easy to visualize. It has distinct morals and virtues in it. I am fascinated with the story telling skills of the Author and am eager to read the other books in the series. However, some scenes such as the battle against Flemgorr could have been elaborated and made more interesting. There are a very few grammatical errors present in the book.
In conclusion, this is a wonderful book bound to be enjoyed by anyone that likes endearing characters with a stunning world. I recommend it to readers that like a quick-read fantasy novel. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
