Jo Clayton was rather prone to prolifically staging the world's being portrayed. Some readers found that her tirelessly detailed descriptions only bogged them down, however I found her work to be inspired. All these years later, and even with the author's passing, I'm still a huge fan.

Currently, I've been dabbling in the fantasy realm of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive and Mistborn trilogy. The former is excellent, but it does take some time to adjust to the amount of world-building he does; the latter is not as good, but I still enjoyed the read.

I'm also very fond of Terry Pratchett.
But for a certain guilty pleasure, I still like Peirs Anthony's Xanth series... so many puns...

Someone I highly recommend would be Brent Weeks, either his completed Night Angel Trilogy or his currently ongoing Lightbringer Series.
Another author would be Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards Series, which is one of the best works of world building and character development I've ever seen. The series is also extremely humorous while making good work touching upon a lot of moral grey areas and confronting the ideas of 'right vs. wrong'.

My all-time favorite, however, is Jacqueline Carey! There are two of her books that I haven't read yet (one isn't coming out until next month). She's amazing!

After Hobb it'd have to be J. K. Rowling. A typical answer I know... but her books are GOOD.

I agree, Jacqueline Carey writes some excellent novels! I enjoyed Kushiel a lot.kaver22 wrote:Gaiman is definitely high on the list. Robin McKinley (Sunshine) and Anne Bishop (the Ephemera trilogy). Also, S.M. Stirling and Tim Lebbon (Dusk and Dawn).
