My favorite fantasy authors are Jonathan Stroud and JK Rowling.
The world, the story, and the characters in their books are just amazing.

My favorite fantasy author would be Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. She has several fantasy series she has written, but the best is the Kiesha'ra series. I did read these when I was in high school, so they may have a YA vibe to them but this series is amazing.

I don't feel it is possible to have just one favorite Fantasy author. There are so many out there. I have a few that I have to buy no matter what:

Terry Goodkind. His ability to draw you in and make you feel as if you are right there with the characters is amazing. I've laughed and cried right along with Richard in his journeys. I am looking forward to, and yet sad at the same time, to the final book he is releasing this year.

Definitely Tolkien first! Ursula K. Le Guin, C.S. Lewis, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Andre Norton. After I get through my to read list this year, I'm sure there'll be more added to this list.
"But to find out the truth about how dreams die, one should never take the word of the dreamer."

Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye.

Fantasy is my favorite of ALL genres so excuse me if I rant for a bit. First off, C.L. Wilson is probably one of my #1 favorite and completely underrated authors. I find the only reason she isn't HUGE is due to marketing. Everything you want in fantasy, strong leads, humor, power, magic, not an annoying villain but a scary one, easy to follow build up and plot twists you wouldn't believe. Probably a top favorite. Next would be Laini Taylor (author of Daughter of Smoke and Bone). Taylor is a very poetic writer that writes in a very different way than usual authors. She takes the typical Angels/Demons plot line and makes you look at it from a different perspective. Not all that shines is gold. And a very down to earth author. I'm hoping J.R.R Tolkein is just a given #1 in this category so we'll go right past him. Christopher Paolini is wonderful. Do NOT judge his books by the Dragon movie that was a complete BUST. The books are a piece of art. And though I could go on, I'll leave it at Gail Z. Martin and The Necromancer Chronicles. Powerful is all I can say on those gems.

I haven't heard of those authors but would love to read some of their work!
My favorite is Sara Douglass love her work! She can just take you away from reality, into another world with relateable characters & scenarios. You can really put yourself into the story & think what would I do? She has this way of making you feel everything the character feels. One of my favorite series of hers is the Axis trilogy! It was the first series of hers I read and I fell in love. I have also read and re-read her Darkglass mountain series.
And my second favorite but only by a little is Richelle Mead, she honestly knows how to write lol to be honest her books are a little soft porn ish :) but not in a gross way. She has a way with words that's make you feel in the moment with the characters.
Love love love them!

Gregory Maguire is my absolute favourite writter. He brings old classic fairy tales to life and makes it extrodinary. No one will ever compare to him. I also enjoyed JKRowlings quite a bit but Maguire is still easily first place Rowlings is actually third place for me. Second place is Philip K. Dick he wrote Minority report. It's about three beings that can predict crimes and the build a division in the police force called pre-crime super good book and a good movie I also enjoyed the tv show they made out of it. I just wish the tv show would have lasted longer.

I enjoy Laurell K Hamilton, Jim Butcher, J. K. Rowling, Andre Norton, Rick Riordan, Christopher Paolini and I'm sure there are many others that I am not thinking of right now. I have read many others during my teens that I cannot remember right now.

Mercedes Lackey is my all time favorite author. Her longevity as an author has allowed her universes to gain such depth you know her worlds as well as your own. Diversity and modern social issues are raised without an in your face feel.

Greetings!
My favorite fantasy authors are one from the old school, Andre Norton.
Her series of the Witch World, are from my days of long ago, my childhood and are a big reason for my love of literature.
Witch World 1964
Three Against the Witch World (1965)
Warlock of the Witch World (1967)
Sorceress of the Witch World (1968)

Then I would add, Samuel R. Delany, especially;
Captives of the Flame
The Jewels of Aptor

Also, because of my love of science fiction I would add John Norman's Goren Series, which is about 26 books or so. It touches on the fantasy/adventure genre.
