Keeping in mind that Kalin is an 18-year-old, picture him saying "whatever" just to get the torture to stop. It doesn't mean he believes he is Kata; he just wants to give them what they want so he can move on.

I don;t think he was brainwashed into accepting. I firmly believe he gave in to them himself so as to suffer less and work on his plan. Also to make the scientists believe he was cooperating.

He called himself Project Kata at that moment to get some shut-eye. He was tired and worried as to whether he will get any sleep that night without submitting to Dennison. Kata always knew he was human, and thus, it added all the more flavor to his revenge.
