Review of I Laugh In Greek
Jessica has taken a new job as a tour rep in Mykonos. She is a little scared that she is underqualified, but figures it should not be anything too crazy. However, when she finds a bag full of cash that she thought was lost luggage, she has quite a dilemma. Why would tourists have so much money in a travel bag? Does she turn the money back in? Will the owners come looking for it? Alongside that, she has her sights set on a local artist, Manos. The gallery that was supposed to host his work is unable to do so due to budget cuts, and Jessica realizes the bag of money is the solution. That amount of money does not just go missing with no consequences. Read I Laugh In Greek by Sarah Ambler to see how it all turns out for Jessica.
Jessica had a penchant for drinking and often found herself hungover for important events. I found this aspect of her character to be a little annoying. It felt as though she spent the majority of the book drunk or hungover. While this was the cause of a few plot points, I found myself frustrated with her choices at points throughout the book. This, however, is not a major complaint.
I did find the plot to be well-developed. The mystery bag of cash led to a more complex situation than I had anticipated upon picking up the book. The pace moved along at a decent clip, but still gave time to establish the side characters along with the main characters. For example, I thought that Sharon, one of Jessica's coworkers, was a delightful character. She was a bit prickly as she had been at the job for years and was excellent at it. She was a bit resentful toward Jessica, given that she wanted the tour rep position, and I thought their dynamic was relatable and fun to read about.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. While I found Jessica to be a little annoying, I thought the plot was well-paced and interesting. With the characters frequenting the beaches, this feels like an airport or beach read. It is best suited for those who enjoy a little bit of mystery, but not a high-stakes crime thriller. The pace feels relaxed and makes for a perfect summer read!
