Review of Kalayla: Unraveling Tangles
Kalayla: Unravelling Tangles by Jeannie Nicholas is one of those books that sticks with you for a long time after you finish it. Racism is a harsh topic to read about, mainly due to the fact that some people will never fully understand it, while others might read about it and be triggered by awful memories. The truth is that writing about a topic as important and cruel as racism is not an easy task, and making sure that everyone understands the message and the suffering behind it is an even harder accomplishment. However, that’s precisely what the author managed to do.
Kalayla is our protagonist, a little girl of mixed-race who lost her father very young and had to survive her life with a dead father and a living, but barely, mother. In the meantime, Kalayla ends up creating a new and loving relationship with her neighbor, Lena, who is an elderly lady who, in some manner, creates a sense of security and compassion for both Kalayla and her mother. These three women are extremely different from each other but at the same time share a unique bond and use their strengths to help each other in different ways. However, there are secrets unveiled that contribute to a dramatic tale in this read and make us wonder about how much some secrets can harm the other person and the number of consequences that racism brings, even to young and innocent children.
I really enjoyed this book. The writing style is impeccable, and I didn’t find any errors, which leads me to say this book was perfectly edited. There are some harsh topics discussed in this book, but that only contributed to a deeper development of the characters and a better understanding of each one of these women’s personalities, which is a highlight of this book. I believe I can say that I didn’t dislike anything about this book, as there are no downsides to point out, which obviously results in a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
Anyone who loves to read raw stories and tales about the reality of life to a lot of people around us will enjoy this book immensely and find comfort in knowing that topics like the ones discussed in this book can be written in such an authentic but at the same time beautiful way.
