Kalayla: Unravelling Tangles by Jeannie Nichols is a lovely story about three generations of women and the ties that bind them together.

Kalayla, who is at the centre of the story, is a young, outspoken girl who masks her vulnerability with a tough exterior and a rebellious nature, and she does not like authority figures. She is quite often rude to her mother and uses a lot of swearing when she talks, however you never doubt the love she has for her.

Maureen O’Rourke LeeRoyce, Kalayla’s mother, has been estranged from her parents ever since she married a man they disapproved of. She works in a restaurant to provide for her daughter, but her main passion is painting. Since she works so much it means Kalayla is often left to her own devices.

Lena Manero Barzzetti carries the lasting scars of an abusive marriage and the devastating loss of two of her four sons in the Vietnam War. Of her surviving sons, one has moved away, and she hasn’t heard from him in years. When she notices that Kalayla is often on her own, she takes her under her wing, which eventually leads to a strong bond between them.

As the stories of the three women unfold, they find an unlikely friendship that transforms their lives dramatically.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5. Jeannie Nichols has a gift for bringing her characters to life in a way that makes you care deeply about all of them. You’re drawn into their struggles, joy and the connections that shape them.

It’s one of those rare books that you simply can’t put down. Jeannie Nichols’s storytelling flows effortlessly, making it easy to lose track of time as you read.

The novel is also beautifully written and thoughtfully edited, with language that feels natural but also engaging. From the very beginning, you are drawn in, and you are invested until the final page. It’s an emotional journey that stays with you long after you’ve finished reading the book. I honestly couldn’t think of anything that would make it better.
