Is it ever appropriate to keep secrets and lie about them? Maureen lies to her 12-year-old daughter, Kalayla, about her family secret. Although she has secrets of her own, Lena, their landlady, thinks Kalayla should be told the truth. Knowing it is none of her business, she keeps her nose out of it. That is, until Kalayla discovers the truth on her own and goes to her, angry at her mother for being a liar. What impact will this have on Kalayla's life? What is Maureen's family secret? Is it better to keep private secrets that may hurt others' feelings?

Although I enjoyed the first book Jeannie Nicholas wrote about Kalayla, I like this edition better because more of the characters are fully developed, adding depth to the overall storyline. The background for each character is fully developed, allowing me to have a better understanding of their actions. Each of the characters is realistic to their age group and background. The historical information about Belfast, Ireland, did a nice job explaining Colleen's actions. Lena is my favorite character because she reminds me of some of the older people I know. Kalayla's determination to find out the truth about her family, or anything else she wanted answers to, is admirable. Colleen is my least favorite character because of her actions toward Maureen and her family. I like the many different themes that the author skillfully intertwines throughout the storyline, which include bigotry, deceit, diversity, redemption, and abuse, to name a few.

In my opinion, Kalayla: Unraveling Tangles by Jeannie Nicholas has no negative aspects. I encountered a few grammatical errors, but they did not distract from my reading pleasure. I gave this professionally edited book 5 out of 5 stars because there was no reason for me to give it a lower rating. It is enjoyable, full of life lessons, and I like the diverse mix of characters it entails.

I recommend this book to mature Christian readers who do not mind non-bordline profanity and enjoy reading about realistic and diverse characters. Many of the characters' actions are a result of their religious beliefs, which may be offensive to those who do not share these same beliefs.
