Charlie Fletcher, on his 23rd birthday, thought it best if he let his secret out and told his mum, Susan, that he’s gay and that he is dating his childhood friend Jason. Charlie has always been this anxious, innocent boy who is always worried about other people's happiness and tries to make everyone happy. Unbeknownst to him, on his mum’s dying bed, she is about to let out a secret that will change him and his three siblings' lives forever. His mum told him that he had another sibling, Tyler. The same Tyler who often visits their house is the son of her best friend, Carol. That was when Charlie started connecting the dots: Tyler resembles his father, Peter. And the astonishing part is that Susan knew and was okay with it. She loves Tyler and takes him as her own. How would his other siblings react to this news? Find out in this intriguing story as more family drama and secrets unfold.

Five Siblings at 23 by Paul Ilet is an emotional and interesting story about family. This heartwarming story will stir different feelings and also resonate with readers. The book touches on strong themes ranging from Peter's nonchalant attitude and lack of care for his children and how he always visits the pub where he lays waste and gets drunk, to Carol’s love for Susan’s children and how she wastes no effort in caring and looking after them, to the Fletchers siblings' love for one another and how they are always there and support one another. The book is written from different characters’ points of view, and I will say the author did a great job in that. I felt connected to each of the characters, and I could feel and relate to them in some sort of way. It felt like I was seeing everything through the eyes of Billy, Vicki, Lizzie, Carol, Tyler, and Charlie. Jason's story conclusion left me in shock and with teary eyes. What makes this story astounding is that readers cannot guess the next twist that will unfold, and each twist will leave one’s mouth agape.

What I enjoyed most about this beautiful story is the author’s writing style. The author writes so beautifully, and the manner the words are woven will draw one into the book, keeping the reader captivated till the last page. There were no lacklustre moments in the book. At one point, I thought I had reached the end of the Fletcher family's secret, but to my surprise, there was still more to discover. Carol is my favourite character. I admire how she cared for the Fletchers like a real mother would. I also liked how the siblings loved her just the same, even after what they were told. Charlie is another favourite of mine. It was brave of him to accept Tyler even though he didn’t know much. His relationship with Jason was also something I admired.

The only thing I wish had been explored more in the book is Billy and Emma’s marriage. I wanted to see what their life as a married couple looked like and maybe learn what Emma’s family thinks about the Fletchers. Aside from that, this is a lovely story that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon, and thus, I rate it four out of five stars because of my aforementioned reasons. This is a book about love, friendship, and family. If you are a fan of these themes, then the book is worth your time.

I guess Charlie would have never guessed that his mother had a secret as well. The fact that the book is packed with other twists and turns makes it sound really captivating. It is good to see what love can actually do in a family, although I am wondering about Peter and the fact that he seems not to care about anyone but himself. Thanks for the review, @Victor Nwabuisi.
