Sister Moon is a four-part story that Roxie Campbell told to Asumini C.. Roxie was born to a crackhead mother, Maria, who slept with someone other than her husband. Maria didn’t want the baby but didn’t know what to do, so she had her. She soon abandoned her, and her older brother, who was just five years old, Sean, started to look after her. When Sean was only 15, he talked a man into hiring him to work on cars to ensure that Roxie had the essentials in life. He never complained that he had to support and feed his little sister, and they became very close. Roxie did not know what she would do if Sean had not been there daily to care for her needs.

One day in late June of 1999, Sean was in a car accident and was killed. Roxie’s world fell apart. Who would take care of her? How would she survive? Her mother only came in and out of her life when she needed money for drugs. She sold Roxie for sex so that she could get high. Read the book to find out how Roxie went through all that she did and if she, indeed, did survive without Sean.

This book is not for the faint of heart. It contains sex, drugs, and a plethora of profanities. Even with that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There was nothing that I did not like about it. It takes you through some hard lessons in life and teaches you how to go on when life throws you a curve ball.

A few grammatical errors and the spacing between sentences needed to be fixed, but that did not take away from this heartbreaking story. Although this story is about a black family, I feel it will resonate with people of all races. Some language used is street slang, but it is easy to understand.

Sister Moon is a book that I recommend only for adults. The sex, drugs, and profanity are too raw for anyone else.  Even though I liked the book, I will give it 4 out of 5 stars because of all the language and drugs. I don’t feel that this is a book for everyone. Some people will be offended by it.

Sister Moon seems like a heart-wrenching memoir. Your detailed review excels at preparing readers for the hard topics featured in this book. I don't think I will read it, though. It seems too raw for me to appreciate fully.
Amazing review, Shirley Ann!

It sounds very tragic and sad. You picked all the right words to describe it in the review and I could feel the story already unfolding while I was reading it. I personally prefer reading stories about overcoming trials but stay away from the heart-wrencher, tearjerker ones so I'll pass.

Memoirs are one of my favorite genres and it sounds like this one was at times difficult to read, not because of the quality of the story, but because of the tremendous difficulties that the author faced. I appreciate your warnings about the mature themes and content. Thanks for another well-written review!

Great review. I appreciate how you described the content and provided a warning for those who might be sensitive to these types of topics. It's devastating to know that things like abandonment, abuse, and child prostitution happen more frequently than most people are aware of. I was thinking about reading this book, but I'm probably not in the right headspace now to read another tragic story. I think reading things like this can wear down your mind when you do it frequently. But I'll keep this book in mind.

I hope that Roxie ended up finding some happiness in life. This kind of story opens one's eyes to what other people can go through. We do not choose the family we are born into. I had a more fortunate childhood than Roxie. I am grateful for that. Due to your review, I am intrigued by Roxie's story. I will add this book to my "want to read" list.

I want to read this book. Memoirs can teach us powerful lessons and in turn be grateful for the lives that we have. Thanks for introducing me to this book.

As mentioned in the review, it is a heartbreaking story indeed. Whether it is a work of fiction or not, this story rings true for so many people in the World. Roxie was so lucky to have such a caring and loving big brother.
